Changing the screening type in Base Data will cause existing material data to be lost. This is because different screening types handle materials in fundamentally different ways. For example, a packaging type requires all input (weight, production location, recycled content, etc.) to be entered specifically in the packaging section. Materials entered in the standard materials section are not included in a packaging calculation — they follow different rules. Data cannot be moved automatically when you change the type. You will need to re-enter your data under the correct section after switching.
Changing the screening type will delete existing material data. Export your data first if you need to keep a record of it.

Why does the CO2 footprint increase significantly after switching to the packaging type?

The increase is most likely caused by a change in how distribution is calculated. In Målbar LCA, distribution rules differ depending on whether a screening is set up as a standalone product or as a component. Switching to the packaging type changes how the screening is treated in distribution calculations, which can result in a significant increase in the footprint.

Using a Scalable component for packaging

If your packaging material is sold by area or length (for example, corrugated cardboard sold per metre), the recommended approach is to keep it as a Scalable component rather than switching to the packaging type. Here is how it works:

Create the packaging material as a Scalable component

Set it up once in your component library.

Add it to a product screening

When you add it to a product screening, specify how much of it is used for that product.

The calculation will be correct

The result is the same as using the packaging type, with the added benefit of reusing the component across multiple product screenings.
This approach saves time, avoids data loss, and ensures a clean and consistent data structure across your portfolio.
Use Scalable component for any packaging material sold by the metre, roll, or weight. It gives you the same accurate result and is easier to maintain.
